Deadline for interested individuals to register as candidates for the Maverick County Hospital District board of directors and Eagle Pass ISD board of trustees comes to a close at 5:00 p.m. Monday and all indications are the positions that will be contested are already set in stone.
At the MCHD incumbents Adolfo Olivarez and Ronald Hixon have registered for reelection. With just hours remaining to register as a candidate there is no indication the incumbents will be challenged.
At EPISD the situation is a little less certain. Incumbents Lupita Fuentes and Hilda Martinez-Caballero have registered for reelection and are joined by Victor Perry who filed for the seat being vacated by Rudy Bowles. Two challengers emerged the first day of registration with Ignacio "Nacho" Saucedo filing for the place held by Bowles thus facing off with Perry and Mayito Obregon filing against board president Fuentes.
Over almost a month of the sign up period being open no challenger has emerged to opposed board vice president Martinez-Caballero and the absence of talk in the community suggests none will register on Monday.
Martinez-Caballero is untested in a contested political race. She was first appointed five years ago and ran unopposed in 2014.
No challenger emerging to oppose Martinez-Caballero indicates a truce may have been worked out between the two established warring political factions. If this is indeed the case it spells trouble for Lupita Fuentes who will be left to fend for herself and could face payback for political firing(s) she authorized earlier in her school board career.
Election for these non-partisan local elected offices will be held in conjunction with the November 6 general election.
If no other candidate(s) file for a seat on the MCHD board the election will be called off and the incumbents certified as reelected, saving taxpayers the expense of holding the election.
