DEL RIO, TX - On Oct. 16, a black bear sow and her cub were spotted in city limits of Del Rio, Texas.
“Our bear hazing protocols provide the best chance for the bear to live wild and relocate itself naturally,” said Jonah Evans, a Mammologist with TPWD. “Trapping and relocating a bear is extremely invasive and puts a lot of stress on the animal, sometimes resulting in mortality, and there’s no promise then that relocation will be successful.”
Following the recent bear sightings in Del Rio, it was discovered that the sow and cub may have been drawn to pet food that is frequently left out by residents to feed local stray cats.
Unfortunately, this incident ended when the sow was shot and killed by a Del Rio resident. The incident is still under investigation by Texas Game Wardens.
TPWD biologists have found a suitable rehabilitation solution for the cub at the Cottonwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in New Mexico.
Approximately two weeks ago the first cub (pictured) was spotted at a Del Rio residence which caused chaos on social media among Del Rio and Val Verde County residents.

Tras los recientes avistamientos de osos en Del Río, se descubrió que la mama Oso y el osezno pueden haber sido atraídos por la comida para mascotas que los residentes suelen dejar fuera para alimentar a los gatos callejeros locales. Desafortunadamente, este incidente terminó cuando la mama Oso fue asesinada a tiros por un residente de Del Rio. El incidente aún está siendo investigado por Texas Game Wardens. Los biólogos de TPWD han encontrado una solución de rehabilitación adecuada para el cachorro en el Centro de Rehabilitación de Vida Silvestre de Cottonwood en Nuevo México. Hace aproximadamente dos semanas, el primer cachorro (en la foto) fue visto en una residencia de Del Rio, lo que causó caos en las redes sociales entre los residentes del condado de Del Rio y Val Verde.
