EAGLE PASS, TEXAS — Sul Ross State University has announced the appointment of Cynthia Gomez as the Interim Executive Director of the Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) in Eagle Pass and Alpine, effective August 19, 2025.
With more than 20 years of service to the SBDC, Gomez brings extensive expertise in helping small business owners thrive. For the past eight years, she has served as a Senior Business Advisor, earning all four levels of Business Advisor Certification and guiding entrepreneurs in critical areas such as finance, management, human resources, marketing, and accounting.
“I am honored to serve as Interim Executive Director and remain committed to helping local businesses thrive,” Gomez said. “The SBDC plays a crucial role in fostering economic growth across the Middle Rio Grande and West Texas regions, and I look forward to continuing this mission in my new capacity.”
Beyond her advisory role, Gomez has a 13-year background in real estate, assisting a wide range of clients as a licensed Realtor since 2012. She also holds both a Bachelor of Business Administration (2003) and a Master of Business Administration in International Business (2004) from Texas A&M International University, and has served as an adjunct instructor.
Her leadership and contributions have been widely recognized. Gomez has earned the State Star Award from the Southwest SBDC Network three times—in 2018, 2019, and 2022—and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
Dr. Sumantra Sengupta, Dean of the Rio Grande College of Business, praised the appointment: “Cynthia’s leadership will be instrumental in strengthening SBDC’s strategic impact. I look forward to working with her in continuing to deliver value for our student body and for businesses across the region.”
This leadership change follows SRSU President Carlos Hernandez’s July decision to align the Eagle Pass and Alpine SBDC Centers under the Rio Grande College of Business, a move designed to further enhance the university’s student-focused mission while reinforcing its support for the regional economy.
