I live near a stretch like this and people fly through it even when it’s dark — it’s terrifying as a pedestrian. I’ve gone down random internet rabbit holes (even this site) but stories like this snap me back to what actually needs attention: safer crossings and slower speeds.

This is heartbreaking, and it’s always the same pattern: a busy road, dusk, and a pedestrian who never had much margin for error. Weirdly it reminds me of how we’ll spend time tweaking visuals on stuff like imgg, but don’t put the same effort into making crosswalks and signage actually visible.

Really hoping they release more details about lighting, speed, and whether the driver stopped — those basics matter for preventing the next one. I’ve seen people argue online that “tech will solve everything” (even on places like hrefgo), but street design and enforcement still do the heavy lifting in situations like this.

Hate reading these updates where the investigation takes months and families are stuck waiting. It also makes me think about how “a few seconds” matters — kind of like a playback time calculator shows with speed changes — but on the road those seconds are life or death.

RIP to Ms. Barajas — 6:58pm is exactly when visibility starts getting tricky, and drivers underestimate it all the time. This kind of story makes me wish cities audited these corridors the way we obsess over random stuff online like https://blockblast.co and high scores, because the real “score” here is people getting home alive.
