Morales Files Petition to Remove Judge Ramsey Cantu, Citing Pattern of Delinquent Tax Payments

MAVERICK COUNTY, TEXAS — Maverick County Precinct 1 Commissioner Gerardo “Jerry” Morales announced Tuesday, August 12, 2025, that he has filed a petition in the 365th Judicial District Court seeking the removal of Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantu from office.
According to Morales, the petition alleges that Judge Cantu has failed to pay county ad valorem property taxes and includes "other grounds" for removal from office. Morales further claims that such delays in tax payments have become a recurring habit for the former Eagle Pass mayor, now serving as county judge.
“This is about accountability and ensuring our elected officials uphold the same responsibilities expected of every taxpayer and public servant,” Morales said in his announcement.
Morales stated that Cantu has faced public criticism in previous years over allegations of delinquent property taxes, which, according to Morales, amounted to thousands of dollars.
Morales is also viewed by some in local political circles as a potential challenger to Judge Cantu in the 2026 election for Maverick County Judge. While he has not formally declared his candidacy, Morales has acknowledged that he is giving the prospect serious consideration.
As of press time, County Judge Cantu has not released any public statement regarding the allegations brought to light by Commissioner Morales.
The petition sets the stage for what could become both a legal and political battle within Maverick County leadership.
