Man Arrested for Assaulting CBP Officers, Impeding Inspection at Del Rio Port of Entry

DEL RIO, TX — U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations officers at the Del Rio International Bridge detained a male U.S. citizen for allegedly assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers or employees.

“Incident of this nature underscore the challenges our officers face while performing their duties,” said Port Director Liliana Flores, Del Rio Port of Entry. “We will take all necessary actions to ensure the safety of our officers and to hold those who commit such acts accountable.”

On Aug. 8, a 26-year-old male U.S. citizen arrived from Mexico at the Del Rio International Bridge as the driver of a personal vehicle and refused to comply with officer requests to surrender his personal cell phone. The man allegedly made physical contact with officers, resisting arrest, refusing to comply, and impeding officers from continuing their inspection. Officers secured the traveler and placed him in a detention cell.

Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested the traveler and initiated a criminal investigation. CBP Office of Professional Responsibility is also reviewing the incident.

“Un incidente de esta naturaleza pone de relieve los desafíos que enfrentan nuestros oficiales en el desempeño de sus funciones”, declaró la directora del puerto, Liliana Flores, del puerto de entrada de Del Río. “Tomaremos todas las medidas necesarias para garantizar la seguridad de nuestros oficiales y responsabilizar a quienes cometan tales actos”.

El 8 de agosto, un ciudadano estadounidense de 26 años llegó procedente de México al Puente Internacional de Del Río conduciendo un vehículo personal y se negó a cumplir con las solicitudes de los oficiales de entregar su teléfono celular. El hombre presuntamente tuvo contacto físico con los oficiales, se resistió al arresto, se negó a obedecer e impidió que los oficiales continuaran con la inspección. Los oficiales aseguraron al viajero y lo colocaron en una celda de detención.

Agentes especiales de Investigaciones de Seguridad Nacional arrestaron al viajero e iniciaron una investigación criminal. La Oficina de Responsabilidad Profesional de la CBP también está investigando el incidente.
