DEL RIO, Texas – Freezing temperatures, winter mixes of snow and ice, and unforgiving river water pose an increased risk of life threatening conditions to people attempting to enter the United States illegally.
On Jan. 8, agents assigned to U.S. Border Patrol’s Del Rio Station were notified by the Mexican Government of a possible drowning in the Rio Grande River.
Agents responding to the scene recovered the body of a pregnant 33-year-old Haitian woman. Through further investigation, it was determined that her husband had drowned days earlier and was recovered by officials from the Government of Mexico.
Since the beginning of Fiscal Year 2021, Oct. 1, agents assigned to Del Rio Sector have recovered the bodies of 18 suspected illegal aliens who had recently entered or were attempting to illegally enter the United States.
Illegal aliens crossing the border face temperatures that may drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit in South Texas, and may be at risk for hypothermia. Persons attempting to cross the dense terrain illegally during winter months often carry less water and wear excess clothing in efforts of keeping warm. The excess layers of clothing, rugged terrain and the assumption that less water is needed during cold weather also pose increased risks of dehydration.
Additionally, migrants crossing the Rio Grande River face unpredictable currents, deep water and frigid water temperatures making it dangerous to maneuver.

DEL RIO, Texas - Las temperaturas heladas, las mezclas invernales de nieve y hielo y el agua del río implacable representan un mayor riesgo de condiciones que amenazan la vida de las personas que intentan ingresar ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos.
El 8 de enero, los agentes asignados a la estación Del Río de la Patrulla Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos fueron notificados por el gobierno mexicano de un posible ahogamiento en el río Grande.
Agentes que acudieron al lugar recuperaron el cuerpo de una mujer haitiana embarazada de 33 años. Mediante una mayor investigación, se determinó que su esposo se había ahogado días antes y fue recuperado por funcionarios del Gobierno de México.
Desde el comienzo del año fiscal 2021, el 1 de octubre, los agentes asignados al sector Del Rio han recuperado los cuerpos de 18 presuntos extranjeros ilegales que habían ingresado recientemente o estaban intentando ingresar ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos.
Los extranjeros ilegales que cruzan la frontera enfrentan temperaturas que pueden caer por debajo de los 32 grados Fahrenheit en el sur de Texas y pueden estar en riesgo de hipotermia. Las personas que intentan cruzar ilegalmente el terreno denso durante los meses de invierno a menudo llevan menos agua y usan ropa en exceso para mantenerse calientes. El exceso de capas de ropa, el terreno accidentado y la suposición de que se necesita menos agua durante el clima frío también plantean mayores riesgos de deshidratación.
Además, los migrantes que cruzan el Río Grande enfrentan corrientes impredecibles, aguas profundas y temperaturas frías, lo que hace que sea peligroso maniobrar.
