BRACKETTVILLE, Texas – A U.S. Border Patrol agent assigned to the Brackettville Station assisted a driver in distress, June 21.
“Events like these perfectly highlight the versatility of our mission, the training and professionalism of our employees, and the compassion that is inherent with being a Border Patrol agent,” said Del Rio Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Doyle E. Amidon, Jr. “Through training and experience, our agents and EMS personnel were able to quickly identify and mitigate a potentially disastrous situation. Our agents stand ready to protect our communities and render aid when necessary.”
While working roving patrol operations on Highway 277 South, a certified emergency medical technician Border Patrol Agent observed a vehicle stopped on the side of the road and stopped to perform a welfare check. Vehicles often encounter trouble on this long road and agents are commonly the first avenue of assistance for such motorists. The driver immediately told the agent he was experiencing medical distress. The driver also disclosed medical history that further elevated risk factors. The agent then identified himself as a certified EMT and performed an assessment, finding that the driver’s vitals were alarmingly high. The driver was then assisted from his vehicle with help from other agents as they arrived on scene.
As members of the Eagle Pass Fire Department and Maverick County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, the driver was responding well to the agent’s efforts and his vital signs had begun to return to safe levels. The driver was then turned over to Eagle Pass Fire Department medical professionals on scene for further care and monitoring.
As an EMT, the initial responding agent was utilizing one of Brackettville Station’s three vehicles that have been specially modified as a mobile EMT station.
Del Rio Sector currently has 87 EMTs and three paramedics assigned throughout sector.
