Morales Secures $2 Million Reimbursement for Eagle Pass Following State Takeover of Shelby Park

AUSTIN, TX — In a major legislative victory for the City of Eagle Pass, State Representative Eddie Morales announced the successful inclusion of a $2 million reimbursement in the Texas House budget to cover losses stemming from the state’s abrupt takeover of Shelby Park earlier this year.
The takeover, which occurred ahead of the city’s planned Solar Eclipse Music Festival, forced the event to relocate, leaving the city and local taxpayers on the hook for the multi-million dollar investment. Morales, who has consistently supported border security and was a joint author of Operation Lone Star, said the state’s decision to seize the park without local consultation overstepped its bounds.
“I support border security. That’s why I was a strong advocate for Operation Lone Star,” Morales stated. “But the takeover of Shelby Park, in large part, was political — a stage for high-profile figures to deliver campaign speeches rather than produce real solutions.”
Morales emphasized that the incident not only disrupted a globally anticipated event but also stripped the community of a central recreational hub. The festival was expected to draw thousands from across the world and deliver a significant economic boost to Eagle Pass.
Thanks to a bipartisan coalition in the Texas House, Morales secured the $2 million reimbursement in the budget. He now calls on the Texas Senate to concur and for Governor Abbott to sign off on the measure.
“Just as the State of Texas deserves reimbursement from the federal government for Operation Lone Star, Eagle Pass deserves to be made whole. This is about fairness to our community and our taxpayers,” Morales said.
